Washed up skull found A human skull was found on the edge of the Waimea Estuary on Sunday night, by two “curious” fishermen. But the skull isn’t expected to be from anything suspicious. Mackenzie Rose and her partner went to the estuary, behind Nelson Airport, to fish when they spotted the skull. “We were just walking along the estuary when we saw it. We didn’t know if it was real or not but I picked it up and we could tell right away that it was real.” The pair then called police, who took the skull, along with some other bone fragments, away for investigation. Mackenzie says the skull was “really heavy”. “It was just bone but we wondered where it came from and how it got there.” Nelson police say they believe

The human skull that washed up near Nelson Airport. the skull and bones may have been dislodged by the recent high tides and wind. They did not anticipate anything sinister, says communication manager Barbara Dunn. “Police are working with DOC archaeologists to identify the bones.”

ran, crawled and slid their way through thick mud in the Moutere Inlet on Sunday morning. The future of the event remains up in the air with the school unsure whether they will get council

consent to run it in the same place next year. Everyone who took part seemed to enjoy themselves with many at the finish line saying that it “needs to continue”.

Schools turn purple for fundraiser

Schools around Nelson turned purple on Friday for the annual Purple Cake Day. Now in its fourth year, Purple Cake Day is a charity event set up by the Kenbe La Charitable Foundation Trust to support children all over the world so they can receive the education needed to break the poverty cycle and create better futures for themselves and their family. At Enner Glynn School, parents baked cup cakes which were then iced by Year 6 students and sold to the rest of the school. There was also a mufti day. Other events were organised across the city, with most of the action taking part in local schools, although there was a “go purple” yoga class held as well.

Police keep tabs on motorbike gangs Police say they are disappointed at the behaviour of motorcycle gang members and their associates over the weekend, with one rider clocked doing 104km per hour in a 50km zone. Police issued more than 50 infringement notices to members of the group, the majority for speed, careless driving or riding on the wrong class of licence. They were in town for a group ride on Saturday. One rider travelling to the event was caught travelling at twice the speed limit. He received a roadside suspension and will face court action. A further three riders received roadside suspensions for riding on the wrong class of licence. They were required to arrange for someone else to ride their bike. Three vehicles were also impounded over the weekend. Police say they kept a close watch on the visiting gang members and their associates for the duration of their visit, to ensure they complied with the law.

Explosives used to free caver lighT NElSoN: It’s all go for Light Nelson, with the announcement that the Nelson Events Management Committee will support the event with a significant grant from the council’s events marketing and development fund. Last year Light Nelson attracted a crowd of 16,000 to the Queens Garden over three nights in July. Light Nelson 2014 is scheduled for July 11-13. SAxToN ovAl UpgrADE: Urgent repairs to Saxton Oval’s drainage system will ensure the stadium is match-fit for future international cricket matches, says Nelson City Council. The remediation work to fix significant issues with the oval’s ground drainage will cost $242,000 and is necessary to ensure the oval is ready to host the Cricket World Cup next year. Work will likely begin in mid-April. gigATowN: Since Nelson Weekly first broke news of Nelson’s bid to win the Gigatown competition, meaning super fast speed broadband for the city, locals have rallied. The dedicated group behind Nelson’s quest has seen the city rise to the top four in the standings, a huge effort. Points are earned from every Tweet, Facebook or Instragram post that includes “#gigatownnsn”.

Nelson cavers used all their skills and experience to rescue a trapped caver over the weekend, even resorting to explosives. Christchurch man Lindsay Main, 62, was with his wife Alice Shanks and 16 other cavers in Mt Arthur over the weekend, when he got stuck in a 15 metre long tight section. Constable Malcolm York, search and rescue incident controller, told the New Zealand Herald that Alice returned to the underground cavern, about 60m in length,

when it she realised her husband could not fit through the tight section. “He was able to back-track out of the squeeze into the cavern. “The other rescuers were able to pass extra clothing through, equipment, food for them to be comfortable for the night,’’ Malcolm says. Explosives were then used to widen the squeeze on Sunday, he said. “Very precise, very small charges were just able to break up the rock that was block-

ing the access. The couple were given high protection gear and were able to move a good 60 metres away from the blast. Nelson caver and friend of the pair, Bruce Mutton, helped in the rescue and says the pair returned to his house to warm up after the rescue. He said they were in good spirits and were uninjured, other than a few bruised ribs. The couple were planning to return to Christchurch after their car was retrieved from Mt Arthur.

All go for trolley derby

It’s that time of the year when hundreds of daredevils in trolleys race down Collingwood St, and Nayland Primary School student Logan Andrews can’t wait. Logan will be entered in the zoomers class of the Robertson’s Collingwood St Trolley Derby this Saturday, starting from 10am. The trolley was built by some students at his school around four years ago and was raced as a school trolley. He says the trolley derby is “fun” and he got to race in front of friends and family last year. Couple escape from burning ship The story of an Auckland couple escaping their burning boat off Pepin Island has been the talk of the town and today new photos emerged showing what was left of the ship, just before it sank. A 40-foot launch, which was home to an Auckland couple Gary and Carol Ardern, sank last Wednesday after it caught fire. They escaped in the nick of time, with their cat. The boat, the Tarapunga, was

built in 1942 in the United States and worked for many years as a harbour defence launch in the United States. It served as a harbour defence launch for the New Zealand Navy and it was also used for extensive survey work all around New Zealand. Volunteers and organisations came to rescue the burning boat, including the coastguard, fire service, police and private and commercial vessels.

Mad Butcher is coming to Stoke A Mad Butcher store is coming to Stoke. While the original Mad Butcher, Sir Peter Leitch, is known as a huge rugby league fan, the Nelson branch of the business he founded will open in the soon-to-be empty Stoke Rugby clubrooms. News of the move is yet to be made official, but sources have told Nelson Weekly that the new Mad Butcher store will open in the middle of the year in the Stoke Rugby club rooms on Songer St. It is understood space for two other businesses will be included in the new development.

The Stoke Rugby Club put their 40 year old clubrooms up for sale last year will move out of the building this weekend. The club is hoping to work with Nelson City Council to build a multi-use facility on Greenmeadows and has been keen to sell its stake in the aging building. Stoke Rugby Club operation manager Kim Biggs, says the club will operate from office space in Stoke, while after-match functions would be held in the Turf Hotel for the 2014 season. Mad Butcher has 39 stores around the country.

The Mad Butcher will open in the current Stoke Rugby Clubrooms.

Soroptimists give education grant Marama Bevan has been chosen as the winner of this year's education grant from Soroptimist International of Waimea. It's the second year the group has run the grant and they say they'd like to see it become an annual scheme to help local women further their education. Marama Bevan, was one of nine who applied. She is in her second year at NMIT, studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing. This grant will allow her to pursue her dream of completing her degree, while taking away some of the added financial pressures that come with such a decision of returning to full time study. "I’m very grateful for receiving this scholarship and hope other women are inspired to follow their dreams.” Soroptimist member Helen Bywater, says the group were really impressed with the quality of applicants.

Schools set to ‘Rock da House’ Nearly every fortnight between the end of this month and August, Richmond Mall will host a mini concert as excitement builds for the 2014 Rock da House event. Thirty-three schools from across the region have confirmed their place in the Richmond Mall sponsored event – the largest school music initiative in the Top of the South. The initiative is about encouraging participation, developing talent and creating opportunities, and is coordinated by musical directors John Phillips and Paulette Nott, along with Dave Pritchard, Leallen Andersen and Monika Burrows who represent some of the region’s schools. Before the final three concerts in Motueka on August 18, 19 and 20, choirs, duos and soloists will perform in the mall food court nearly every second Thursday evening for about an hour. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says a schedule for the mini concerts would be con-

firmed in the coming week, and she was excited about the opportunity to be involved with Rock da House. “We’re a community mall and the schools are the centre of the community. It creates a bit of excitement for our customers,” she says. “It looks like we’ll have a mini concert every fortnight and that’ll be between 6:30pm and 7:30pm in the food court, starting in March.” Last year’s show in Nelson drew a total audience of 3500 over the three nights, making it a huge success, and musical director John Phillips was excited to have the mall on board for 2014. “The mall is becoming a bit of a hub for us for little performances like family duos, and there’s a roster of schools coming down,” he says. “It’s fresh and funky and everyone is getting in behind it.” Another new initiative this year is the development of the Richmond Mall Rock da House regional choir – an auditioned choir of about 60 kids with exceptional talent.

There are a number of reasons why people become volunteers, but for Maureen Ashton it was to “give a helping hand in the community”, and she’s never looked back. The Stoke woman has been helping with Meals on Wheels for the past 17 years. Tuesday is her day. She travels to the pick-up area and then spends about half an hour going around distributing lunches and desserts to those on the list. This week marks the annual appeal week for the New Zealand Red Cross and they are currently looking for more volunteers to help with Meals on Wheels, community transport and the community visitors service. Maureen never expected to be a volunteer for 17 years, and wasn’t even aware it had been that long. “I had to find out. The time just seems to have flown past. I enjoy it and I enjoy the contact with the more elderly.” Richmond couple Gordon and Vivienne Moody also help out with Meals on Wheels, and

You get to know the clients you see, so well,” says Gordon. When the Moodys signed up to become volunteers, it was mainly Gordon’s role and Vivienne would help out when he couldn’t. But now it seems to have gone the other way and Gordon says he’s the “emergency driver”. Even though they’ve been volunteering for nearly a quarter of a century, it’s

something both Gordon and Vivienne don’t plan to stop any time soon. “Society runs on volunteers. I spent 20 years in Scouts and that’s when I realized everybody volunteers for things.” Other than the one time they “embarrassingly” forgot, Gordon says the funniest moment was probably when he accidentally ran over the dessert. Nelson Community Night Shelter supervisor Edward Andrews is just a little bemused after receiving a presentation at the Nelson's All Saints Church on Sunday. Edward received the award from Nelson City mayor Rachael Reese for spending 20 years working at the shelter on Vanguard St. The shelter is run by the trustees of the Anglican Church parish and members of the Society of St Vincent de Paul and provides an evening meal and bed for men who can't find permanent accommodation. Although Edward has helped hundreds of the city's homeless get back on their feet during that time, he insists he is simply doing his job. And the committed Christian says without hesitation, there is nothing else he would rather be doing than working at the shelter. "I wanted to do something to help others and serve the Lord and I'm lucky to have the opportunity to do that," Edward says. "I am in the right place doing the right thing - I feel like I am a missionary in my own country." Edward, who dedicated his life to helping others after becoming a Christian 33 years ago,

Photo: Andrew Board. says he applied for the supervisor's job at the night shelter after a conversation with Vicar Tony Andrews and his wife Helen. He had previously been involved with the Prison Fellowship at Mt Eden and United Maori Mission in Auckland and wanted to continue working for Christian charities when he moved to Nelson in 1993. Although Edward says it can be a tough job, the rewards are immense. He says he gets a real thrill when he sees some of the shelters former residents who have turned their lives around. "I meet quite a few people who stayed at the shelter and have got themselves sorted out. They

come up to me in the streets and say "thanks for helping me" - it's nice to know I was a small part of that." Edward says he also enjoys the support he gets from the All Saints Church and the wider community. All Saints vicar and trustee Simon Martin says Sunday's ceremony was "a very moving tribute" to Edward. "It was a very nice service and what started with rowdy applause soon became loud foot stomping and cheering. He is very much a part of the fabric of the church and its family but we also realise we share him with the community."

The brook camp is one of the last places remaining in this area where one can actually say they are camping in nature. The Maitai camp is on a main road and affords no privacy like the Brook - perhaps the council would be better off marketing the camp better or close the Maitai one and merge them both. The Brook camp is far superior for holidays - or does it have another agenda for what is a lucrative and prime real estate? The Nelson area is becoming more and more devoid of natural environments to holiday in and you can't call Tahuna a natural environment being so close to the airport, even though the beach is right there. Nelson Young Professionals (NYP) is a fantastic organization for the next generation of leaders and decisionmakers in the Nelson region. NYP brings together young professionals in an effort to build on their skills and knowledge through the generation of social networks and lessons learned from those who have previously succeeded. NYP was established in 2009 to foster cross industry and cross profession relationships, so that members are able to develop both personally and professionally. Although the number of members is about 200, the focus for NYP this year is to make more people aware of the group and the great opportuni-

ties that the organization can offer to young professionals in the region. “Last year we really focused on gaining momentum, becoming active and getting out there again. NYP is really useful for making contacts. Other networking opportunities are based mainly for senior level partners or associates. There isn’t really an opportunity for networking at a junior level. By having our events we are networking at the lower level,” says committee president Michelle Byczkow. As serious as this may sound, the most important thing about NYP is having fun and creating new relationships. The NYP committee is constantly organizing events where their mem-

The committee tries to hold one large event every month and next week they will be holding a BBQ in the Vines at Kaimira Estate. Between speakers and major events, NYP also have monthly meetings at Rhythm and Brown, where they enjoy a social drink and a catch up. Although the target market for NYP is those in the first 15 years of their profession, the term professional is used very loosely. NYP applies to any profession and this is what makes it such a diverse and interesting organization. It includes lawyers, dentists, accountants and doctors as well as dental assistants, teachers and office assistants. A membership fee of $20 is charged which goes towards the events and the general running of the organization. • Wednesday, February 12, my birthday. I wake to a lovely day, and plan accordingly. All activities will be pleasant and exactly what I want to do. Not a problem. The day moves along swimmingly and then I took a step backward, to admire something. That’s all it took. Just one little step and I went crashing down really hard. There was pain, and a feeling that something was wrong. One glance showed a wrist in the shape of a caterpillar on the incline. And it wouldn’t straighten out, no matter what. • Three hours later, we return from hospital. My arm in a very solid cast, and with instructions to be careful because it was a bad break. My arm would be in plaster for six weeks. Oh well. Nothing for it but to do as I’m told, and behave myself. • Our house has wrap around verandas, so it is easy to find a pleasant spot to sit and view the garden, and that has been my daily activity. This garden is lovely in late winter with various coloured hellebores enjoying themselves. However, I’m thinking the garden could be improved during the summer season with colourful fuchsias So that is first on the Things To Do list. There are two birdbaths in this space as well, both supporting empty pots. I quite like an empty pot or two about the place, and these two didn’t bother me. But I am thinking to make a change there. Dianne, who works with us in Blenheim, told me of a bird station that she has made. It is successful and so simple to make. She has used a hanging wire planter, which had been lined with coconut fibre. Inside the planter she placed a plastic saucer, the kind that you use to catch water under a flower pot. This is used as the meal tray for the bird food. It is highly successful she tells me, with parent birds bringing their fami-

Then the birds can take a bath straight after breakfast if they want to and start the day with a clean slate. So that’s second on The List. • Marie Shelly cleared a space so that a lovely tree trunk is visible from my breakfast spot. I am enjoying that, and have gone a little further to think that some foliage at ground level could be removed to allow some dappled sunlight to filter through. During this tidy up, it was discovered that an evergreen azalea had decided that enough was enough, and stopped living. It’s a shame, because over the years the plant had developed an attractive layered shape. But all is not lost. It was decided that a gentle climber should be placed at the foot of the plant to twine through the branches. I am on the hunt for something suitable. Maybe it should be planted in a pot to keep it safe. Task number three for The List. • Across from the garden and right where I am sitting, is a veranda post with the rose Madame Alfred Carriere braced against it. Very enjoyable. But the planting at the base is not that great. I had planted a lonicera to twine through the rose to create some fragrance. But the honeysuckle didn’t want to be bothered, and hung around at the feet of the rose, along with a few violets. Not a satisfactory planting. Madame Alfred can stay where she is, but everything else is to be removed, and replaced with a collection of bearded irises in generous sized pots. I have the irises, but not the pots. • Tasks number four and five loom up, and I have not even finished breakfast yet! It’s going to be a very busy six weeks ahead for me it seems!

Habitat for Power prices ‘too high’ Humanity By Brian Egerton, Habitat director What most of us take for granted. Recently, I went to speak to a local group about who Habitat is and what we do. As I was trying to find the meeting room, one of the staff at the venue spotted my ‘Habitat’ shirt, gave me a great big smile, stuck out her hand and introduced herself. She had recently moved into one of our new houses and was absolutely delighted with her new home. She said that her children were also loving it and were already in better health than they had been while living in their previous house. I found that amazing – not the fact so much but because I had intended to tell a similar story about another Habitat family during my upcoming presentation. This other family had two boys, one of whom was often sick and requiring visits to the doctor, and the husband had asthma which meant he was often off work. Their previous rental house was cold and damp, didn’t keep the wind out and there was mould growing in numerous places! One of the ceilings was so damp, it was like wet Weetbix – you could push your finger into it! Hardly a good environment for anybody, let alone a couple of young children. Their new Habitat house is warm, dry and the boys are hardly ever sick now, and the husband’s asthma is gone. As a result of that he has been able to keep a job and feels great as he knows he is now able to provide for his family. The benefits of a decent, warm and dry home are many-fold and the downstream health and social benefits are yet to be fully realised.

Yacht clubs combine for teams racing Nelson Yacht Club, Tasman Bay Cruising Club and the secondary schools sailing programme, are getting together for a big week-end of Teams Racing this weekend. Each team will be made up of six boats, each from a different class and with sailors of different abilities. An example of a team could be a junior in an optimist or a starling, youth sailors in a laser or a 420, a family in a Sunburst and an adult team in a Flying Dutchman. Each team will include a trailer sailor and a keelboat with a crew of 4 to 6 sailors. All sizes and shapes of sailing boat and sailors are welcome and the teams will be assigned based on ability and the class of boat so that the event will not only be a great fun weekend but competitive too as points will add up over the

regatta. The team with the lowest points winning the competition. It’s free to enter at Nelson Yacht Club between 7 and 8pm on Friday March 14. Teams will be allocated and announced at the race briefing at Nelson Yacht Club at 9.30am on Saturday before racing gets underway at midday. There will be four races each day. There will be spot prizes at Tasman Bay Cruising Club on Saturday evening and the final Prize Giving and a BBQ on the deck at Nelson Yacht Club on Sunday evening where the overall winning team will be announced. Racing will take place in the Harbour, so spectating will be easy from the Nelson Yacht Club, where the canteen will be open and from the piers and restaurants on Wakefield quay.

Big year planned for historic club Nelson might be the oldest rugby club in the country, but its youngest members certainly have a big part to play – that’s where the club hopes to discover the next Tom Marshall, James Marshall or Shane Christie. Nelson has one of the biggest pools of JAB players, with 220 kids spread across 14 teams. The JAB competition runs from Under-6 grade through to Under-13s. After that the kids head into college teams before returning for senior rugby. Quentin Harwood, the club’s junior captain, is gearing up for another busy season of rugby, starting from May 10. “In the Nelson Bays area there are three clubs that have around that 220 kids each mark and we’re part of that,” he says. “We’ll be expecting about 14 teams again once we’ve gone through all of the registrations.” The official registration day was held last Saturday but players are still welcome to sign up for Nelson Rugby Club and can do so by calling Quentin on 027 302 3508. From there each player is put into a team depending on their age group and it will be up to coaches to decide when training will commence ahead of the first round of matches. Under-6 and Under-7 are the two youngest grades in the competition and therefore play rippa rugby. All home matches will be played at Neale Park. In the senior club this year, Nelson is fielding its senior A and B teams again for 2014. The senior A team has been the most successful in Nelson over the past decade and last year it continued its top form, winning the Tasman Trophy. Senior club captain Bruce Henderson says the club is aiming to defend its title and secure a top four place in the Nelson Bays club competition. “The boys have already spoken about that and they want to nail down that top four spot and then push from there to win the comp.” He says with a number of the club’s stars playing Super 15 rugby there are a few gaps in the team, says Bruce, which will be coached again by Murray Scott. Murray will be assisted by Kade Heke and Robbie Malneek, who will hope to join the squad in the second round after recovering from surgery. The senior B squad already has around 25 players at training and Bruce says the team is hoping to win the competition after starting well but fading last year. “We’re really happy with the guys who have turned up and they’re all really keen but the travel for the B’s boys does test the squad,” he

Every rugby team at Nayland College will now play under the Stoke Rugby Club banner, unless it’s for a one-off first XV match. Having withdrawn from the Press Cup at the end of last season, 2014 is expected to bring a new dawn for Nayland College, who will now enter a team in the local under-18 competition instead. But in that grade, and in under-16, under-15 and under-14, the team will be now representing Stoke and wearing a red uniform. Nayland College’s director of sport Mark Cochrane, says there needed to be some change after the withdrawal from the Press Cup, and the decision to link up with Stoke was the right way forward. “Stoke is a community team, and rather than having Nayland separate from that, this is now a Stoke team with all of the Nayland boys playing for them,” he says. “This is a joint venture and we wanted to create a pathway from JAB all the way up to senior rugby.” Because each player is now representing a club, it would be possible to attract players from other schools or those who have left school – as long as they fit into the age bracket.

Falcons ready for football final This weekend’s ASB Youth League final at Trafalgar Park will be the biggest football game to be played in the region in more than a decade, and the captain of the home side is confident that the Nelson Marlborough Falcons will be the ones celebrating come fulltime. Coey Turipa will lead the New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons against Auckland City this Saturday in just their second season of national league football, and he says the prospect of playing in a national final hasn’t sunk in yet. “I think that when the first whistle blows against Auckland City then it’ll hit us. We’ll really know we’re in a final and we’re a really good chance of winning a final and in front of a home crowd,” he says. Only a fool breaks the two second rule." Remember that line next time you're driving and have a check on your own following distance behind the vehicle in front of you. My own experience driving around the roads across Nelson Bays is that a huge number of drivers are following far too close behind the vehicle in front. Everyone on the road thinks they're an expert driver, but the reality is that expert drivers know that they won't have time to take evasive action if they are following less than two seconds behind the vehicle in front and something unexpected happens. Virtually every day my staff have to attend nose to tail crashes that are avoidable. Even low speed crashes in peak hour traffic can have devastating effects on people's lives. It's your responsibility to be able to stop safely in the space you have in front of you. The two second rule is really simple precaution to take that could save your day. On another topic, I would like to talk briefly about domestic family violence. My experiences as a police officer tells me that it affects people in all communities at all socio-economic levels. Many types of pressures exist that adversely affect the family household. Partners have a right to argue, parents have a right to provide a verbal 'telling off ' to their children. Notwithstanding this, we need to ask ourselves, 'is the argument at an ok level?' Most of us will be able to tell the difference between a healthy argument or telling off and one that is escalating and inappropriate. If you hear the latter type of situation you need to call the police. I would rather my officers attended a job and found it to be low level than to be attending a more serious situation because they were not alerted early enough!
